What is a Domain?

To have a website that lives on the internet, you’re going to need a domain name. Without a domain name, there’s no way for visitors to access your website!

Before domain names were invented, you needed to type in the IP address for a given website to access it. Today, domain names act as a placeholder for the complex string of numbers known as an IP address. So, instead of typing in a series of numbers like 134.122.26.223 you type in murtazasultani.me into your browser.

What is a Subdomain?

A subdomain is an entirely separate part of your website that still operates under the same main domain. For example, your primary domain could be “example.com,” while your blog could be on a subdomain at “blog.example.com”.

To create a subdomain, you must have a primary domain name. Without a primary domain name, there’s no way to add a subdomain to it.
